TempDiffr FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What does TempDiffr do?

Answer: Use TempDiffr to view the temperature difference between any two worldwide locations, and share the temperature difference with others.

Question: Why are there two maps?

Answer: This application compares the temperature between any two locations anywhere in the world. There is a map for each of those locations. Each map displays the name of the location and the temperature at this location in both Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Question: How can I put Celsius before Fahrenheit?

Answer: Temperature is shown in three locations on the main window: on each map and in the dividing bar where the temperature difference is displayed. The temperature can either be displayed as Fahrenheit followed by Celsius in parenthesis, or as Celsius followed by Fahrenheit in parenthesis.

To change this setting:

  • 1) Press the Info button in the upper-left corner of the main window.
  • 2) Select the first entry, Settings, to open the settings window.
  • 3) If Fahrenheit first is set ON, then the format will be Fahrenheit followed by Celsius.  If Fahrenheit first is set OFF, then the format will be Celsius followed by Fahrenheit.

This setting also changes the format of the message used when sharing. This is discussed below.

Question: What are the three buttons below each map?

Answer: Each map has an associated toolbar with 3 buttons.

Left to right these are:

  • First, the locations button. It looks like a magnifying glass. Pressing this button will open the saved locations list.
  • Second, the update button. It looks like an arrow pointing at its tail. Pressing this button will update the temperature data for the displayed location.
  • Third, the weather button. It has the text “Wx", which is an abbreviation for Weather. Pressing this button will open the Weather Underground web page for this location.

These buttons will be covered in more detail in the following questions.

Question: Is this the first iPhone app you have written?

Answer: Yes, TempDiffr is my first iOS application.

Question: Why did you choose this application?

Answer: At my old job I held weekly 1-on–1 meetings with people all over the world. I opened each meeting with questions about their home, their culture and about the current weather. I live in the United States, which uses Fahrenheit, but nearly every other country in the world uses Celsius. It was difficult for us to compare temperatures. So I wrote this app to solve that problem.

Question: Are you going to write another iOS application?

Answer: Yes. I’ve already begun work on it. It is targeted at people who use OmniFocus or Things and follow the “Getting Things Done” methodology. If this includes you, please contact me via e-mail, Twitter (@CognitivePuppy) or App.Net (@CognitivePuppy).

Question: Is there anyone you would like to thank?

Answer: Yes. First I would like to thank The Weather Underground for providing the location and temperature data used in this application. I would like to thank my family for their support of my app development activities. And I’d like to thank you for trying my application.
